More Info
The village is set on large peperino boulders and is protected to the south by walls interspersed with towers still all crowned with battlements, to the east, west, and north by deep, wide ravines.
It is a predominantly hilly area rich in hazelnut groves, vineyards and olive groves. There is no shortage of oak forests and numerous cozy chestnut groves.
Within the castle walls it retains typical medieval architecture with characteristic houses, towers, narrow streets, small squares, and external stairways.
The village and its color are so distinctive that Mario Monicelli, the great director of unforgettable films, chose it to shoot scenes from “L’armata Brancaleone,” a 1966 film.
Few people know that Vitorchiano is home to the only Moai-the Easter Island sculptures-existing outside the Island.
Not to be missed are the traditional festivals that enliven the village, such as the Peperino in Fiore, in early June, which colors streets and houses with flowers, lively and beloved, and the Cavatello, in August, a triumph of water-and-flour pasta with fennel sauce.
