More Info
Santa Maria Nuova is located in the center of the province of Ancona, actually ideally at the apex of an equilateral triangle that has the same distance from both Ancona and Porto Recanati. Mild climate, enchanting landscape, rolling hills that descend from the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea; on clear days, when the sky is clear, the gaze can sweep as far as the “Blue Mountains” of Leopardi’s memory.
The Church of St. Anthony of Padua in the central square is known because its interior bears a basilica altar with polychrome ceramics by Vitali da Foligno and an 18th-century mechanical organ. With its masonry facade, St. Joseph’s Church is a classic example of 18th-century architecture. The one-room interior is enriched with rich stucco decorations, late Baroque altars, an 18th-century wooden crucifix, and paintings including one from the 17th century attributable to Aquilini.
At the beginning of June is the Feast of the Hunter, June 13 is the Feast of the Patron Saint Anthony of Padua, at the end of June is the Italian and World Organ Championships, and in August is the International Roller Skating Event and the Regional Bob Car Championships.
