More Info
The city of Nizza Monferrato, in its oldest part, is triangular in shape with districts all in a straight line. The territory of Nizza Monferrato is distinguished by the large number of historic buildings and churches of considerable value. You cannot miss a visit to the town’s symbol, the Campanone, a civic tower incorporated into the town hall, in which is enclosed a precious bronze bell that still tolls at all hours. On the masonry of the Campanone – north side – signs of the siege that Nizza Monferrato suffered in 1613 by the Savoyards are still visible today: the more observant will notice a cannonball lodged in the wall.
Nice and its fine Barbera wine were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
The municipality participates in the Asti Palio, the historic bareback-mounted horse race that is the protagonist of the Settembre Astigiano.
An opportunity to taste all Piedmontese types of Barbera DOC is during the Nice is Barbera event in May.
Nice is also the land par excellence of the hunchback cardoon, protected by the specific Consortium, and of the white truffle, specialties that can be tasted during the “St. Charles Patronal Fair – Day of the Truffle and the Hunchback Cardoon,” in November.
At this rest area, moreover, the Camper Club Nicese organizes a large gathering of campers every November to all eat together one of the most celebrated dishes of Piedmontese tradition: Bagna Cauda. For the occasion, the City of Nizza Monferrato, also allocates the parking lot adjacent to the area and a stretch of land along the river for campers, but it is still advisable to reserve a spot.
Reservations are also recommended for the traditional Nice Barrel Race, held on June 8 and 9.
