More Info
Located in the green hills on the border with ‘Umbria, Lubriano stands on a tuff promontory that stretches along the Valle dei Calanchi.
Along the road that connects the village to Bagnoregio, you will come across a fountain that bears a very special inscription: “You who pass this way in the summer and have an impending thirst, stop and drink at this spring this blessed water of the Louse, which besides quenching your thirst, can refresh your eye.”
The historic center follows the trend of the tuff promontory on which it is placed and dominates the Valley of the Gullies. Inside it is the main square, Piazza San Giovanni Battista, from which there is a very impressive view of the valley and Civita di Bagnoregio.
Inside the town, its gray tuff tower stands imperious over the town center.
Also worth seeing, the Church of St. John the Baptist and the Bourbon del Monte Palace, a fabulous example of Baroque architecture. Among alleys, arches and ancient squares, the medieval quarters of Lubriano open up with all their ancient charm.
The name Lubriano, is thought to descend from the Etruscan “Lùbrie,” meaning “place of purification,” probably due to the exceptional abundance of spring water. It is also possible to visit an old pumping station that still houses a pair of piston pumps from the first half of the 20th century inside.
For all botany enthusiasts, then, a must-see is the Flower Museum, housed in an old watermill. Still then the “Wild Fruit Garden” and “Edible Herb Garden” offer visitors the chance to taste fruits straight from the trees and learn about wild edible herbs.
