More Info
Among the cities of the Marche region, the municipality of Camerino boasts an ancient center virtually unaltered in its medieval layout, boasting noble architecture such as the Ducal Palace located in Piazza Cavour, at the center of which is the statue of Sixtus V. The palace houses the ancient university inside and is well worth a visit to admire its porticoed courtyard, the Hall of the Spouses with frescoes dating back to the 15th century and the beautiful Valentinian Library that holds a prestigious book collection.
Also worth a visit is the Botanical Garden, which covers an area of nearly one hectare and is divided into two sections, with one section containing a grove composed of centuries-old trees and the other containing ornamental, medicinal and wild plants. In addition, the kitchen garden is embellished with a small rock garden where mainly Central Apennine plants are grown, and there are some recently restored fountains. Also remaining in the square is the Archbishop’s Palace, the Diocesan Museum, and the Cathedral, which houses the 15th-century work of Our Lady of Mercy inside.
Among the city’s events, on Epiphany Day the “Nougat Festival” is held and “The World’s Longest Nougat,” which entered the Guiness World Records, is presented. In May, the “Corsa alla Spada e Palio” is held: an event in which athletes belonging to the city’s terzieri compete for the Sword. During the event there is also a historical re-enactment with a parade in period costumes, celebrating, toasting and tasting typical specialties of the past in Camerino’s various taverns, which remain open until late for the occasion.
In August, the “Camerino Festival,” an International Review of Chamber Music and Theater, is held.
