More Info
It has ancient origins, probably dating back to the period of the Second Punic War (217 B.C.), and has always been an important trading center.
The historic center, dominated by the Ducal Palace, is embellished by the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which houses a 17th-century altarpiece depicting the “Nativity,” attributed to Santafede, and a “Virgin and Child” by Gamba.
A number of contemporary art installations have been set up at various locations in the municipality, creating an open-air museum, among the few in Italy, and there is a small art gallery within the municipality.
A small multimedia museum has been set up in the town hall dedicated to the Bufù, a “friction drum,” which can be heard in the late evening of New Year’s Eve and on New Year’s morning, when small spontaneous orchestras crisscross the town.
