A 10th-century document from the Lucca archives informs that lords of Lombard origin started a village of huts, today’s Capannoli, because the previous settlement on the banks of the Era River suffered frequent flooding. It was with the Della Gherardesca family that the village assumed greater importance because the noble family had a castle built there. From Pisan rule in the 13th century, it passed to the Florentines and later to the Lorraine.
The Villa Baciocchi Museums are well worth a visit. This is a complex that encloses the Zoological Museum, Archaeological Museum and Botanical Park . Nearby, the hamlet of Santo Pietro Belvedere is worth a visit, both for the beauty of the view and for the medieval urban structure of the historic center.
The countryside is crossed by the Strada del Vino delle Colline Pisane, where quality wines traceable to DOCG, IGT or the new DOC Terre di Pisa are produced.
Nearby there are also many CAI nature trails for walking, biking or MTB riding, and even horseback riding. On the Strada Provinciale della Fila, which runs from Pontedera to Peccioli, in addition to the bike path is theValdera airfield of the Aero Club of Pisa, ideal for ultralight glider and hang gliding enthusiasts, where ultralight and free flight courses are held, as well as drone pilot courses.
In September in Capannoli, the traditional National Bird Fair is held.
