Monterubbiano is a charming town that stands on a hill 463 m high. slm and sweeps its panoramic views from the Adriatic Sea to the Sibillini Mountains, passing through the Aso Valley. The whole country (for about 2 km), is surrounded by the castle walls inviting tourists to a beautiful route where the Gates (Porta del Pero, Porta S. Andrea and Porta S. Basso) can be admired. The town is also very interesting for the presence of Romanesque churches such as S. Maria dell’Olmo with its characteristic apse and the Pievania di S. Stefano e Vincenzo with its silent naves.

Then we find the Church of St. Francis (1242), which, with its Baroque bell tower, makes a fine display in panoramic views of the country, and the Church of St. John the Baptist and Evangelist with its frescoes from the 1300s and 1400s. The Pagani Theater (1875) and the painting by Vincenzo Pagani (1539) aH inside the 17th-century church of St. Mary of the Literati are the pride of the Monterubbianese. As well as the public garden “G. Leopardi” (S. Rocco 1872), which occupies an area of 2600 hr, where you can see immense views and breathe the purest air. Also important is the presence of an Art Gallery and an Archaeological Museum, and throughout the year, upon request, cultural tour operators can be had for guided tours of the historic center as well, so that the township can be appreciated in all its

The historical-artistic beauty,friendliness and tranquility make Monterubbiano a town not only to visit but also to experience. Throughout the year it offers numerous events; among them we have on Good Friday (in even-numbered years) the solemnization of the “Dead Christ.” A 16th-century chalk papier-mâché Christ is carried in procession through the village, lying on a 17th-century coffin adorned with fine velvets, resting on an artistic wagon from the second half of the 19th century, made on three indented levels. On Pentecost Day, however, Monterubbiano relives the past with the historical re-enactment of the “Sciò La Pica.” The story goes that the Sabines traveled to the Picenum following the flight of a woodpecker-here the archaic-originated custom that takes place every year. They parade in medieval costumes, with bacchanalian sounds and the exciting knightly tournament in which 4 knights, one from each Arts and Crafts Guild (Artisans, Mulattieri, Zappaterra and Bifolchi), compete in the “Giostra Dell’Anello.”

Monterubbiano also boasts numerous festivals during the summer period,where visitors can taste typical dishes such as polenta (last Sunday in July) tagliatelle frìtte (typical Monterubbianese recipe August 10 and 12), cannelloni (August 16).
